Evolution , Development and Fitness in Genetic Programming : A Position Paper

Developmental approaches have been introduced in Genetic Programming, one of the stated aims being to generate more regularly-structured solutions. The success has been limited. By contrast, natural biological systems are able to generate relatively high levels of regularity. Evaluation during the developmental process is argued as the missing link. Inspired by this, new developmental genetic programming systems are introduced here, incorporating evaluation during development. The new approaches yield measurably more regular structures, combined with better performance, and in particular substantially improved scalability. Genetic Programming, Development, Evaluation
